The valley of Huasco

Geography

The valley of Huasco is located in the third region, and is situated in the northern part of Chile, some 430 miles north of Santiago. There are four communities in the zone between the coast and cordillera:
  • Huasco, the harbor
  • Freirina, a close neighbor to Huasco
  • The City of Vallenar
  • Alto del Carmen, with it's 28 villages in the two valleys of San Felix and El Transito
The rivers that spring from the Cordillera, join the Rio Huasco that flows to the sea. The Santa Juana reservoir, which contains 160 million cubic lts of water, was constructed to provide for the basic water needs of the region.
The climate of the area is semi-arid, and is characterized by dry hills and valleys, with shrubs of thorns, such as cactus.
