The valley of Huasco

Economy

In the region's interior, the economy is "agriculture based", with the production of avocados, various citric fruits such as peaches and pears, and various types of vegetables and grains. Grapes are grown, and have become a major export of the region. Also there are people that live of breeding goats.

In the regions between the cities of Vallenar and Huasco, an abundance of olive trees are cultivated, which allows for the production and harvest of olives and olive oil products.

In the harbor region, there exists a mix of both large and small fishing operations. The economy is further supported by the harvest of large shrimp from the Rio Huasco.

It goes without saying, that many, if not all of segments of the economy of this region depend on the proper quality and quantity of their water supply.
